Mġarr United’s first UEFA Women’s Champions League campaign ended with a 6-1 defeat to Slovak champions Spartak Myjava in Saturday’s first-round qualifying final.
The Maltese champions arrived at Myjava Stadium on the back of a historic 4-0 victory over Flora Tallinn, but the hosts established control early and built a three-goal lead inside the opening 28 minutes.
Early goals leave Mġarr chasing the game
Andrea Bogorová opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the 11th minute before Sára Kršiaková doubled Myjava’s advantage seven minutes later. Katarína Vredíková then made it 3-0 as the Slovak side punished Mġarr during a difficult opening spell.
Mġarr responded before the interval through Carlyn Presley. The forward, who had scored a hat-trick against Flora, headed in Yulya Carella’s delivery in the 42nd minute to reduce the deficit and take her tally to four goals in two European appearances.
That goal gave Mġarr some encouragement at half-time, but Myjava restored their three-goal cushion through Eliška Dvořáková on the hour. Madelyn Dougherty added another seven minutes later, before the hosts completed the scoring in the 81st minute.
Mġarr finished the match with ten players after Yanina Méndez received a second yellow card in the 89th minute. The result sent Myjava through to the next stage of the champions path and brought Mġarr’s short but significant European run to a close.
A landmark first European campaign
Although the final proved a step too far, Mġarr leave Slovakia with a notable achievement from their debut campaign. Their opening victory over Flora made them only the third Maltese women’s club to win a match in the competition, following Birkirkara and Swieqi United.
The European appearance followed a landmark domestic season in which Mġarr won the Assikura Women’s League, the Assikura Women’s Knockout and the MFA Jubilee Cup. Ryan Vella’s side therefore return home with both a valuable first taste of continental football and a clear measure of the level required to progress further.
Attention will now turn to the new Maltese season, with Mġarr seeking to build on the standards that earned them their first European qualification and an opening-night victory in Slovakia.
