Sweden made a strong start to their Women’s EURO 2025 campaign with a 1-0 win over Denmark in Geneva, extending their unbeaten run to 13 matches.
After losing 6-1 to Sweden last month, Denmark started very cautiously, sitting deep with five defenders. Sweden, however, quickly showed their attacking threat. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd created an early chance for Filippa Angeldal, but her shot was blocked well by Stine Ballisager.
A lengthy VAR check for a Denmark penalty, which wasn’t given, delayed the match for nearly five minutes. Clear chances were rare in the first half, but Sweden came close just before the break when Angeldal’s free-kick was pushed over by Danish goalkeeper Maja Østergaard.
Angeldal continued to look dangerous and finally broke the deadlock 10 minutes into the second half. After a neat one-two with Kosovare Asllani, she slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, scoring for the third game in a row.

Denmark nearly hit back straight away, but Emma Snerle’s shot was cleared off the line by Nathalie Björn. Sweden almost doubled their lead shortly after, but Frederikke Thøgersen made a goal-line clearance to deny Stina Blackstenius.
In the final minutes, Danish star Pernille Harder came close to equalising, but her shot hit the crossbar, denying her a record 79th international goal.
Sweden held on for a well-deserved win in a group that also features Germany. It’s a disappointing result for Denmark, who now face the risk of another early exit.
