UEFA continued to press ahead with efforts to challenge Gianni Infantino’s leadership of FIFA, even after stepping back from a threatened boycott of FIFA competitions.
According to reports, UEFA officials remained confident that a unity candidate could be found to stand against Infantino when he seeks re-election. The situation reflected growing tension around FIFA governance, transparency and the balance of power between football’s global and continental bodies.
The dispute had centred partly on concerns over proposed commercial plans linked to major FIFA competitions, including fears that future tournament interests could be opened to outside investors. Reuters reported that UEFA was expected to lift its boycott threat after receiving assurances that those plans would not be revived.
Despite that, the political pressure on Infantino did not disappear. European football officials were still expected to pursue wider governance reforms, while questions remained over whether a credible challenger could gather enough support before the next FIFA presidential election.
Infantino, who has led FIFA since 2016, has faced renewed scrutiny from sections of European football. Reports suggested that opposition to his leadership had grown beyond UEFA circles, although his wider support base across world football remained a key factor in any potential contest.
The coming months could therefore prove important in determining whether the criticism develops into a formal electoral challenge or remains a political warning from European football’s governing body.
