United pull off stunning comeback to reach semis

Manchester United’s rollercoaster season found its brightest moment yet as they advanced to the UEFA Europa League semi-finals in dramatic fashion, defeating Olympique Lyonnais 5-4 after extra time in a thrilling tie at Old Trafford.

With their hopes of silverware resting solely on the UEL, United began with urgency and took the lead inside 10 minutes. Noussair Mazraoui slid a pass down the right for Bruno Fernandes, whose square ball was tapped in by Manuel Ugarte. The hosts nearly doubled their advantage moments later, but Lucas Perri denied Casemiro following a high-press turnover by Garnacho.

Lyon took time to grow into the match, eventually testing André Onana through Paul Akouokou and Rayan Cherki, both denied by solid saves. Fernandes nearly produced a moment of magic with a thunderous volley that struck the bar and later sent a long-range effort inches wide. United kept pushing and doubled their lead just before the break, as Diogo Dalot latched onto Harry Maguire’s long pass and slotted into the far corner.

Garnacho had a golden chance to finish the tie early in the second half, but a heavy touch and tame finish let Lyon off the hook. That miss proved costly. Corentin Tolisso pulled one back for the visitors with a header from a recycled set-piece, and shortly after, Nicolás Tagliafico bundled in Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ mishit cross to level the tie.

Momentum shifted again in the 89th minute when Tolisso saw red for a second yellow, but United couldn’t capitalise before full time. Despite being down to 10 men, Lyon went ahead in extra time through Cherki’s strike from the edge of the box, before Lacazette extended their lead from the penalty spot after Luke Shaw fouled Malick Fofana.

Seemingly out of it, United mounted a last-gasp response. Casemiro won a penalty that Fernandes calmly converted, and then in the final minutes of extra time, Kobbie Mainoo kept his composure to cut inside and slot home a dramatic equaliser. Just a minute later, Harry Maguire completed the comeback, rising highest to head in the winner and send Old Trafford into a frenzy.

It was a sensational ending to an epic contest, and United now move on to face Athletic Club in the semi-finals – their European dream still alive.
