Unai Emery’s Aston Villa took control late in the first half in Istanbul, with Youri Tielemans opening the scoring through a stunning volley.
Moments before the break, Emiliano Buendía doubled Villa’s lead with a beautifully curled finish.
Morgan Rogers added a third after the interval to complete a dominant display against Freiburg, securing Villa’s first trophy since the 1996 League Cup and their first major European honour in 44 years.
For decades, Villa’s greatest triumph had been their famous 1982 European Cup victory over Bayern Munich, sealed by Peter Withe in Rotterdam. That night has long stood as the defining moment in the club’s 152-year history.

But Villa’s current squad were determined to etch their own names into club folklore.
Now Tielemans, Buendía, John McGinn and their team-mates join the legendary figures of 1982 — including Withe, Tony Morley, Dennis Mortimer and Nigel Spink — in Villa history.
In a fitting tribute, with Withe and Mortimer watching from the stands, Villa wore white shirts rather than their traditional claret and blue, mirroring the kit used in the win over Bayern Munich.
The triumph also reinforced Emery’s remarkable Europa League pedigree. The Spaniard has now lifted the trophy five times, having previously won it with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016, and with Villarreal in 2021.
Although Emery insisted before the match that he did not see himself as the “king” of the Europa League, Villa’s victory certainly strengthened that reputation. Among the 20,000 jubilant supporters inside the Besiktas Stadium was lifelong Villa fan Prince William, while actor Tom Hanks also sent his support before kick-off.
The success capped a memorable end to the season for Villa, who had already secured Champions League qualification with victory over Liverpool the previous week.
Their achievements were all the more remarkable considering they began the campaign with six winless matches and only two goals scored during that difficult run.
Villa’s first victory of the season came against Bologna in the Europa League, the beginning of a superb sequence that saw them win 13 of 15 matches on their way to the final, where they overwhelmed Freiburg.
After near misses in recent years — including defeat in the 2024 UEFA Conference League semi-finals and exits in last season’s Champions League quarter-finals and FA Cup semi-finals — Emery never lost belief that Villa would eventually shed their reputation as nearly men.
That faith was rewarded in style.
The Europa League success marked another milestone in Villa’s resurgence since Emery arrived in October 2022, when the club sat just three points above the relegation zone.
Having suffered relegation in 1987 and again in 2016, while also losing their previous four domestic cup finals, Villa had endured decades of frustration since conquering Europe in 1982.
Those painful memories were swept away on a historic night beside the Bosphorus.
Villa dominated from the outset and nearly took an early lead when Noah Atubolu denied Rogers.
Tielemans finally broke Freiburg’s resistance in the 41st minute after Rogers delivered an excellent cross from a cleverly worked short corner, allowing the Belgian midfielder to thunder a volley beyond Atubolu.
It was only Tielemans’ second goal of the season and his first since December.
Yet even that strike was overshadowed by Buendía’s superb effort just before half-time. Given space outside the area, the Argentine curled a magnificent shot into the far corner.
Rogers then sealed the victory in the 58th minute, sliding in to convert Buendía’s cross as Villa’s long-awaited European celebration erupted in full voice.
