First Qualifying Round – Leg 1

A visibly fatigued Ħamrun Spartans side battled to a hard-earned 1-1 draw away to NSÍ Runavík in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League first qualifying round tie, producing a determined display despite arriving in the Faroe Islands only hours before kick-off following their well-documented travel disruption.
The Maltese side looked physically drained after spending more than 36 hours trying to reach the Faroe Islands, yet they showed resilience and character to return home with a precious result ahead of next week’s second leg in Malta.
Ħamrun made the brighter start in what was an evenly contested opening period, enjoying good spells of possession and looking comfortable in the early exchanges. However, they were punished in the 26th minute when loose defending from a corner allowed captain Klæmint A. Knudsen to head past the goalkeeper and give the Faroese hosts the lead.
NSÍ nearly doubled their advantage three minutes later, with Knudsen again proving dangerous from another attacking move, but Ħamrun managed to survive the scare.
The Spartans responded positively and almost found an equaliser in the 33rd minute when Ceter broke into the penalty area, only to be denied by an excellent save from the NSÍ goalkeeper.
Ħamrun emerged after the break with renewed purpose and deservedly restored parity in the 56th minute. Lucas Villela produced a well-weighted pass into the path of Tobias Björnstad, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net to level the scores.
The closing stages saw NSÍ attempt to regain the lead through a series of set-pieces, while Ħamrun looked dangerous on the counter-attack and through individual moments of quality. Despite opportunities at both ends, neither side could find a winner.
The tie now remains finely balanced, with Ħamrun Spartans returning to Malta knowing that victory in front of their home supporters will be enough to book their place in the second qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League.
