Valletta return to European football on Thursday when they face Raków Częstochowa in the first leg of their UEFA Conference League second qualifying-round tie.
The match at the Municipal Sport Stadium “Raków” in Częstochowa kicks off at 18:30 Malta time, with the return leg scheduled for next week on 30 July at the Centenary Stadium in Ta’ Qali.
For the Citizens, this is their first continental appearance since the 2020/21 season and a significant step up against a club that has become a regular challenger near the top of Polish football.
A demanding start in Poland
Raków enter the competition directly at this stage after ending their domestic league campaign strongly. UEFA’s form record shows victories over Piast Gliwice and Arka Gdynia in their final two league fixtures, underlining the threat they can pose at home.
Valletta’s priority will be to remain compact, manage the opening stages and prevent the hosts from building sustained pressure. The first leg does not need to settle the tie, and the Maltese side’s task is to keep the contest alive before returning to Ta’ Qali.
Set pieces and transitions may offer Valletta their best opportunities. Raków are expected to have more possession, so the Citizens will need discipline without the ball and enough composure to exploit the spaces left when the Polish side commit players forward.
Six-year wait comes to an end
Valletta qualified for the competition through their Meridianbet FA Trophy success. Their return has been anticipated since the draw, when Maltasport reported that Raków would stand between the Citizens and the next round.
The Polish club won the Ekstraklasa in 2023 and has built valuable European experience in recent seasons. Valletta therefore travel as outsiders, but a disciplined away performance could ensure the second leg retains genuine importance.
