Several interruptions to the electricity supply affected Floriana FC’s UEFA Conference League qualifying match at the Centenary Stadium earlier this evening.
According to information provided by the Malta Football Association, the disruptions were the result of a technical fault at a nearby electricity substation, which impacted a number of areas in the vicinity, including Ta’ Qali.
Due to the external power failure, the stadium was forced to switch to its backup generator. However, the system also encountered operational difficulties, largely due to the high temperatures, leading to further interruptions during the closing stages of the match.
Despite the challenges, the fixture was successfully completed, with the backup power system allowing the game to continue until the final whistle.
The Malta FA stressed that the interruptions were not caused by any issue with the Centenary Stadium’s floodlighting infrastructure. The problem originated from an external electricity supply failure and was therefore beyond the association’s control.
