Floriana coach Daniel Portela has challenged his players to restore their identity when they face Drita in the UEFA Conference League second qualifying round at the Centenary Stadium on Tuesday evening.
The Greens return to European action at 19:30, one week after a damaging 5-1 defeat away to Shamrock Rovers ended their Champions League campaign. Floriana had travelled to Dublin with a two-goal advantage, but the Irish champions recovered to advance 5-3 on aggregate.
Portela acknowledged that the performance in Ireland fell short of the standards his side had set during the opening leg. His message before the Drita match was direct: “Floriana must recover its playing identity for this game.”
Full squad available for first leg
The coach expects a tactical contest and has stressed the importance of concentration from the opening minutes. Floriana have been given a boost by the availability of a full squad for the first leg.
Captain Dunstan Vella also believes the team must use the Dublin setback constructively. He said confidence inside the group remains strong and that the players know they can perform at a higher level than they managed in the second leg against Shamrock Rovers.
The focus now is on producing a controlled home performance before the return fixture in Kosovo on 28 July. Floriana’s Champions League exit in Dublin showed how quickly the balance of a European tie can change when momentum is lost.
Drita bring recent European experience
Drita enter the tie after a narrow 4-3 aggregate defeat to Kauno Žalgiris in Champions League qualifying. The Kosovo champions also carry valuable experience from last season, when they reached the Conference League league phase after navigating multiple qualifying rounds.
That background makes them a demanding opponent, particularly if Floriana allow the visitors to dictate the tempo. The Greens will need greater control in possession, sharper defensive organisation and more consistent pressure than they produced in Dublin.
The reward for the winners is a third qualifying-round meeting with Tre Fiori of San Marino. That draw gives both clubs a clear incentive to establish an advantage before next week’s second leg.
