Aston Villa came very close to pulling off an incredible comeback in the UEFA Champions League, but despite once being 5-1 behind overall and winning 3-2 on the night, they were knocked out by PSG 5-4 on aggregate, with the French side going through to the semi-finals.
Villa Park was buzzing before kick-off, and the home side used that energy to put early pressure on PSG. But the French champions, used to big European nights, held strong through the first 10 minutes. Then, they hit Villa on the break. Emiliano Martínez failed to hold onto a cross from Bradley Barcola, and Achraf Hakimi smashed the loose ball into the roof of the net.
Now three goals down overall, Villa’s chances looked slim. Things got worse before the half-hour mark when Nuno Mendes finished off another quick counter-attack, smashing in off the post after a pass from Ousmane Dembélé. Still, Villa didn’t give up, and they were rewarded when Youri Tielemans’ shot deflected off Pacho and wrong-footed Gianluigi Donnarumma.
After the break, Villa needed something special—and they came out firing. The stadium erupted when John McGinn fired in a brilliant long-range shot that flew over Donnarumma and into the top corner. Just two minutes later, Marcus Rashford beat his man on the wing and set up Ezri Konsa, who calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner.
Villa had several chances to make it 4-2 on the night and level the tie overall. Konsa, Tielemans and Marco Asensio all had great opportunities but couldn’t take them. Despite throwing everything at PSG in the closing minutes, Villa couldn’t find the all-important fourth goal.
In the end, PSG held on and will play either Real Madrid or Arsenal in the semi-finals as they chase their first ever Champions League trophy.
