Federico Valverde produced one of the great individual Champions League performances as Real Madrid dismantled Manchester City 3-0, leaving Pep Guardiola’s side with a mountain to climb ahead of the return leg at the Etihad.
Few saw this coming. Madrid arrived missing Mbappe, Bellingham and Rodrygo, with City the firm favourites. The script was torn up inside 45 minutes by a midfielder who has long been one of the best in the world.
The opener came in the 20th minute through a moment of breathtaking simplicity. Courtois launched a long pass over O’Reilly, Valverde brought it down, glided past the onrushing Donnarumma and slid the ball home from a tight angle. City barely had time to recover before it was 2-0 seven minutes later, a deflected pass falling perfectly for Valverde to drive a low left footed finish beyond the goalkeeper.
The third and most spectacular arrived in the 42nd minute. Brahim Diaz clipped a perfectly weighted ball over City’s defence, Valverde cushioned it waist high, moved around Guehi and hammered a volley into the net. A finish of genuine brilliance, and the first hat trick of his career.

City pressed after the break and won a penalty when Donnarumma brought down Vinicius, but the goalkeeper guessed correctly to keep the clean sheet. Courtois was outstanding at the other end, producing a stunning leg save to deny O’Reilly as City chased an away goal that never came.
The tie is not over, but with three key absentees potentially returning for Madrid in the second leg, the task for Guardiola’s side looks as daunting as any they have faced in recent European campaigns.
