Floriana will attempt to complete a major European result on Tuesday night when they face Shamrock Rovers at Tallaght Stadium in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League first qualifying-round tie.
The Maltese champions travel to Dublin holding a valuable 2-0 advantage following an impressive first-leg victory at the Centenary Stadium. Robert Murić opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time before Mustapha Jah doubled the lead late in the contest.
Floriana’s position was strengthened when Shamrock Rovers midfielder Matt Healy was dismissed after receiving two yellow cards in quick succession during the second half. The Greens took full advantage and will now begin the return match with a clear route into the next qualifying round.
Despite that cushion, Floriana will be aware that the tie remains alive. Shamrock Rovers are experienced European campaigners and will expect a strong response in front of their home support, where an early goal could quickly alter the atmosphere and momentum.

Floriana’s task will be to remain compact without becoming passive. Their two-goal lead allows them to manage the contest, although retreating too deeply for long periods would invite pressure. A single away goal would leave Shamrock Rovers needing four on the night to qualify without extra time.

Players to watch
Murić was one of Floriana’s main attacking threats in Malta, producing the breakthrough with a curling finish and playing a part in the move that led to the second goal. His ability to carry the ball and exploit space could be particularly important as Rovers push players forward.
Federico Varela will also be central to Floriana’s hopes in Dublin. The hard-working midfielder provides leadership and intensity in the centre of the pitch, qualities that were again evident in the first leg. His performance suggested he is ready to continue where he left off last season, and his ability to compete, organise and retain possession could be vital against the hosts’ expected pressure.
Prediction
Rovers are likely to apply far more pressure at Tallaght Stadium, but Floriana’s first-leg advantage gives them room to absorb difficult periods and target spaces left behind.
