PSG hammer Chelsea in London to seal crushing aggregate win

Paris Saint-Germain produced another dominant display against Chelsea, winning 3-0 at Stamford Bridge to complete an emphatic 8-2 aggregate victory and book their place in the UEFA Champions League quarter finals.

Chelsea had gone into the second leg hoping to produce a remarkable comeback after their heavy first leg defeat, with the home crowd creating an electric atmosphere before kick-off. However, any early belief was quickly wiped away as PSG struck inside the opening six minutes.

A costly error from Mamadou Sarr allowed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to break through on goal, and the Georgian made no mistake as he finished past Robert Sanchez to put the holders firmly in control once again.

PSG punished Chelsea again just eight minutes later. After the hosts lost possession in midfield, the French side launched a swift counterattack which ended with Bradley Barcola curling a superb effort into the top corner from the edge of the area, effectively ending any hopes of a Chelsea fightback.

The visitors continued to control the game and even had the ball in the net for a third time in the first half through Kvaratskhelia, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside after Warren Zaire Emery had strayed beyond the defensive line in the build-up.

Chelsea did show some reaction towards the end of the opening half, but Matvei Safonov proved equal to the task, producing important saves to deny Joao Pedro, Cole Palmer and Jorrel Hato in quick succession. At the other end, Sanchez also had to be alert to keep out Barcola from a tight angle.

The Blues returned after the break knowing their European campaign was slipping away, and Joao Pedro went close with a curling effort as they looked for at least a positive response. Liam Rosenior then introduced fresh legs just before the hour mark, with Liam Delap among those called upon, and he almost made an immediate impact only to be denied from close range.

PSG, though, remained ruthless. Moments later, another rapid counter attack carved Chelsea open and Senny Mayulu added a third on the night with a composed finish into the top corner.

Chelsea’s miserable evening was made even worse late on when Trevoh Chalobah was forced off on a stretcher following a serious looking injury, capping off a difficult night for the London side.

For PSG, it was another statement performance as they extended their strong run against English opposition and moved confidently into the quarter finals, where they will continue their bid to retain the Champions League title.
