Juventus outclassed by Benfica in Turin

Vangelis Pavlidis scored a goal and provided an assist to help Benfica secure a 2-0 win over Juventus on the final matchday of the UEFA Champions League group stage, ensuring they advanced to the knockout round playoffs alongside Juventus.

Benfica travelled to Turin knowing their spot in the knockout rounds was not yet guaranteed after a dramatic 5-4 loss to Barcelona on matchday seven, where they let a two-goal lead slip twice. Pavlidis, who had scored a first-half hat-trick in the Barcelona match, opened the scoring in the 17th minute against Juventus. He simply tapped in a pass from centre-back Alexander Bah.

Juventus nearly found themselves in deeper trouble when they lost possession in stoppage time in the first half, but goalkeeper Mattia Perin made a crucial save to deny Pavlidis. Trailing at half-time for the first time in a Champions League home match this season, Juventus tried to respond through Khéphren Thuram, whose shot was saved by Benfica keeper Anatoliy Trubin. However, Juventus struggled to create clear chances, showing why they’ve failed to score in three of their last five European matches.

The only time Trubin was tested again was when Nicolás Otamendi nearly scored an own goal from a cross by Weston McKennie. While Juventus lacked threat, Benfica made no mistake, doubling their lead in the 81st minute. Orkun Kökçü received a pass from Pavlidis on the edge of the box and drilled a low shot past Perin.

That goal sealed Benfica’s third win in four European away games, securing them 16th place in the group, while Juventus finished 20th.
