Davide Frattesi overcame personal heartbreak to become Inter Milan’s hero in their dramatic 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final on Tuesday night.
The 25-year-old midfielder came off the bench in the 74th minute and scored a stunning late winner just two minutes from full-time—only a day after the passing of his beloved grandmother.
Inter had taken the lead in the 38th minute through captain Lautaro Martinez, whose sharp finish put the visitors in control at the Allianz Arena. Bayern responded late, with veteran Thomas Müller levelling the tie in the 85th minute and threatening to shift the momentum. But Frattesi’s decisive goal shortly after ensured Inter would take a valuable advantage back to Milan for the second leg.
Speaking to Inter TV after the match, Frattesi opened up about the emotional toll of the past few days.

“In my life, I’ve always thought that my best quality was my mindset. I found myself in a situation where I couldn’t continue on my usual path,” he said.
“I was very close to my grandmother and wasn’t used to seeing her like that. It was tough, but I know that she’s involved somehow tonight. Maybe she’s cheering me on from up there.”
The late goal was a fitting tribute and a powerful moment for Frattesi, who showed incredible mental strength to perform on such a stage under trying circumstances.
The win puts treble-chasing Inter in a strong position heading into the second leg, especially after their frustrating 2-2 draw against relegation-threatened Parma in Serie A last weekend. Frattesi emphasized the importance of maintaining focus in both European and domestic competitions.

“We’ll try to attack even more, and we need to attack well when we manage to recover possession, like we did for the second goal this evening,” he added. “We’ll need to play well and be ruthless.”
Inter fans will hope Frattesi’s moment of resilience inspires the team as they look to book a place in the Champions League semi-finals and continue their impressive run on all fronts.
