Floriana’s UEFA Champions League campaign came to a painful end at Tallaght Stadium after Shamrock Rovers overturned a 2-0 first-leg deficit with a commanding 5-1 victory in Dublin, progressing 5-3 on aggregate.
The Greens travelled to Ireland holding a valuable two-goal advantage following their impressive victory in Malta, but that cushion began to disappear after only seven minutes when Lee Grace rose to meet Jack Byrne’s corner and headed the hosts in front.
Floriana responded well and restored their aggregate advantage in the 13th minute. Tomislav Gudelj finished a move created by Kemar Reid’s replacement, M. Jah, to make it 1-1 on the night and 3-1 to Floriana across the two legs.
However, Shamrock Rovers continued to press with intensity and regained the lead in the 29th minute. John McGovern finished after being supplied by Adam Brennan, reducing Floriana’s aggregate lead to one goal and giving the home side renewed belief before the interval.
The match remained finely balanced at half-time, with Shamrock Rovers leading 2-1 on the night but Floriana still ahead 3-2 on aggregate.
The complexion of the tie changed completely after the restart. Rovers increased the tempo, pinned Floriana deeper inside their own half and eventually scored the goal that levelled the aggregate score.
McGovern struck again to complete his brace, before Graham Burke put the Irish side ahead in the tie with another decisive finish. Burke’s goal also carried personal significance, making him the leading League of Ireland scorer in European competition.
Floriana attempted to respond, but the Greens struggled to escape Shamrock Rovers’ sustained pressure. Goalkeeper Guilherme Cioletti produced several important saves to keep his side within reach, but the hosts continued to create opportunities.
Jack Byrne then completed the scoring with Rovers’ fifth goal, sealing a remarkable turnaround and ending Floriana’s hopes of progressing in the Champions League.
The 5-1 result represented the first time Shamrock Rovers had scored five goals in a European Cup or Champions League fixture. It also made them the first League of Ireland club to overturn a two-goal first-leg deficit in European competition.
Floriana will be disappointed by the manner in which their first-leg advantage slipped away, particularly after Gudelj’s early equaliser had placed them in a strong position to progress.
The Greens’ European campaign is not over, however. Their elimination from the Champions League means they will now continue their continental journey in the UEFA Conference League.
