Competition: UEFA Champions League First Qualifying Round – First Leg
Maltese champions Floriana begin their European campaign this week when they host Irish champions Shamrock Rovers in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League first qualifying round tie. A place in the second qualifying round awaits the winners, where their next opponents will be determined by UEFA’s draw for that stage.
Match Preview
Floriana return to Europe’s premier club competition after clinching their latest Maltese league title last season. The Greens have a proud European tradition and famously reached the first round of the European Cup proper in the early 1990s, when they were eliminated by Portuguese giants Porto. However, progression has proved difficult in recent years, with Floriana often falling in the qualifying rounds of UEFA competitions.
Daniel Portela’s men will be hoping to make home advantage count before travelling to Ireland for the return leg. Even if they fail to progress, Floriana would still have a second opportunity in Europe by dropping into UEFA Europa Conference League qualifying.
Shamrock Rovers, meanwhile, arrive in Malta with a significant advantage in terms of match fitness. The League of Ireland season is currently in full swing, and Stephen Bradley’s side are again among the pacesetters domestically. The Irish champions come into the clash on the back of a positive run of results and remain difficult to beat in all competitions. Shamrock have plenty of European experience and have regularly featured in Champions League and Europa/Conference League qualifying, even if the group stages have often remained just out of reach.

Shamrock Rovers are unlikely to make wholesale changes from the side that won their latest league outing. Experienced duo Jack Byrne and Graham Burke should both be involved from the start, while Jake Mulraney and Adam Brennan are expected to operate in the wide roles.

Malta Sport Prediction
This is an extremely difficult tie to call.
Floriana will have home support behind them and possess enough quality to trouble the Irish champions. However, Shamrock Rovers’ match sharpness could prove decisive, with the League of Ireland season already well underway.
Expect a tight and competitive encounter that could ultimately be decided by fine margins.
