Real Madrid star Jude Bellingham has admitted he prefers playing in a more advanced position but is fully prepared to adapt his role for the benefit of the team as they push to rediscover their winning formula.
The England international was instrumental in Real’s La Liga and Champions League triumphs last season, shining in an attacking role. However, his position on the pitch has evolved this campaign following the arrival of Kylian Mbappé.
Bellingham, 21, made an explosive start to life in Madrid, netting eight goals in his first nine league appearances. This season, though, he has managed just two in nine games, albeit finding the net in back-to-back matches earlier this month.
Speaking to reporters ahead of Real’s Champions League clash with Liverpool, Bellingham reflected on the changes to his game.
“It’s been an adjustment, like any other adaptation,” he said. “The style of play and approach have shifted, but I’ve shown I can play in different positions. I prefer being further forward, but for me, the team always comes first.
“I’ll play wherever the manager puts me, and I’m happy to help the team in any way I can. This club lost Karim Benzema last summer – one of its greatest-ever players – so there was a gap that needed filling.
“This season, we’ve brought in one of the best players of this generation in Kylian Mbappé. He’s an incredible goal-scorer, and naturally, my role has evolved to suit the team’s needs. I’m completely on board with that.”
Bellingham’s flexibility will be crucial as Real look to maintain their momentum in Europe and domestically. After Wednesday’s showdown with Liverpool at Anfield, Los Blancos return to LaLiga action against Getafe on Sunday.
With Bellingham’s selfless attitude and Mbappé firing up front, Carlo Ancelotti hopes his side can find the balance needed to deliver silverware once again.
