AEK Athens make winning Champions League return with 1-0 victory over LASK

AEK Athens marked their return to the Champions League with a 1-0 victory over LASK, as Razvan Marin’s superb free-kick secured three points in their opening league-phase match.

Back in Europe’s premier club competition after a seven-year absence, AEK produced a disciplined performance to claim an important victory and make an early statement on the continental stage.

Marin proved to be the match-winner, finding the net with a well-taken free-kick that gave LASK’s goalkeeper little chance. The Romanian midfielder celebrated in front of the AEK supporters, with the result sparking scenes of excitement among the home fans.

The victory represents a significant moment for AEK, who endured a difficult Champions League campaign in 2018-19, finishing their group without a point. This time, they have made the perfect start and will now look to build on the result as they target progression to the knockout stages.

AEK’s rise has come during an important period in the club’s history. Under the ownership of Greek shipowner Marios Iliopoulos, who took control of the club two years ago, the side have established themselves as one of the leading forces in Greek football.

Their identity is deeply connected to Athens and the club’s refugee heritage. AEK were founded in 1924 by Greek refugees from Asia Minor, with the club becoming a symbol of a community that had been forced to leave their homes.

That history continues to influence the club today, with AEK’s yellow-and-black colours and double-headed eagle symbol representing a strong connection to their origins.

Their support also carries a distinctive identity. A section of AEK’s ultras has developed a reputation for an anti-racist and anti-fascist outlook, with strong links to the alternative culture associated with Athens’ Exarchia district.

The modern AEK squad reflects the club’s diverse background. The team contains players from a wide range of countries, with 21 of the 31 players listed in the squad described as foreigners.

Serbian coach Marko Nikolic is leading the side, while experienced players such as Marin and Luka Jovic provide international pedigree. Barnabas Varga has also made an impressive start since arriving in Athens, already scoring six goals across competitions.

That mixture of nationalities has helped create a squad with an increasingly international character, while the club’s historical identity remains central to its appeal.

The win over LASK gives AEK three valuable points as they begin their Champions League campaign, and the Greek side will now turn their attention to their next European challenge against Shakhtar Donetsk.

After seven years away from the competition, AEK Athens have wasted little time reminding Europe that they intend to be more than just participants.
