Thomas Tuchel’s appointment as the manager of the England team will officially begin on 1 January 2025. The 51-year-old German will be the third non-British permanent manager of the men’s team, following in the footsteps of Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
This decision comes after Gareth Southgate’s resignation in July following England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. Lee Carsley, who was appointed as interim manager in August, will continue to lead the team for the Nations League matches against Greece and the Republic of Ireland next month.
British coach Anthony Barry will join Tuchel’s staff as his assistant, with the FA confirming him as their “preferred candidate” from a pool of other candidates who were interviewed. The FA board approved this decision last week and Tuchel signed the contract on 8 October. The official statement from the FA explained that the announcement was delayed to avoid any distractions during the recent international camp.
