Manchester United coach Erik ten Hag explained why Cristiano Ronaldo didn’t get a chance in the derby
The “Red Devils” were slapped in the Manchester derby by the “Citizens” – it was 6:3 in the 8th round of the Premier League for the players of Manchester City.
United’s coach, Erik ten Hag, is under attack, his team infamously ended a streak of four consecutive victories, and after the debacle at the Ittihad, the media also teased him about the status of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese watched the entire match from the bench, and the Dutch expert tried to explain why one of the best footballers in the world didn’t get a chance.
“I didn’t want to bring Ronaldo into the game out of respect for him and his career,” said ten Hag, disappointed with his team’s performance:
“Our approach was unacceptable. Really, I did not expect something like this, nor could I have imagined it. In the previous matches, we showed progress, a good atmosphere and commitment, but now none of that! When you play against top-class players like Manchester City, you have to give your best – we didn’t do that.”
Ronaldo started only one match in the starting eleven under ten Hague and is still waiting for his first goal in the Premier League this season.
