WALK FIT Walking Football for Inclusion and Togetherness is a new initiative aimed at promoting sport, community engagement and active ageing. The project introduces a slower paced and low impact version of football, primarily designed for adults aged 50 and over. It also welcomes individuals of other ages who may benefit from a gentler way to remain active due to health conditions or reduced mobility.
The initiative is led by Swieqi United Football Club in partnership with A.S.D. Real Sala Bolognese from Italy. The first phase of the project focuses on training individuals who wish to become walking football coaches or referees. The sessions are open to the public and no previous experience in football, coaching or refereeing is required.
The first training session will take place on Saturday 21 February at 9.30am at the Swieqi United FC Club House in Swieqi. Participants will attend a theory workshop covering the rules of walking football, safeguarding responsibilities and guidance on delivering inclusive and safe sessions for older players.
A second session will be held on Sunday 22 February at 9.30am at St Klara Football Pitch in Pembroke. This session will include practical coaching and refereeing exercises on the pitch.

Dr Justin Fenech, President of Swieqi United FC, said the training sessions are part of ongoing efforts to expand walking football in Malta and increase community participation among older adults. He explained that walking football is structured to reduce physical intensity, making it suitable for individuals who may have stopped playing due to concerns about injury or fitness.
In addition to promoting physical activity, the WALK FIT project aims to address social isolation by creating opportunities for older adults to stay engaged within their communities. The partnership with the Italian club will also support the development of walking football initiatives in Bologna while expanding participation in Malta.
Following the training phase, newly trained coaches and referees will deliver structured walking football sessions tailored to participants. An open day for those interested in joining walking football activities is scheduled for 28 March, with further details to be announced. The programme will conclude with an international walking football tournament involving Maltese and Italian teams, encouraging community participation and family involvement.
