The relationship between Kevin De Bruyne and Antonio Conte appears to have been far from harmonious during their time together at Napoli, with fresh comments from both sides revealing a clear breakdown in their footballing relationship.
The controversy began when De Bruyne openly admitted he was pleased to see Conte leave the club. The Belgian midfielder did not hide his frustration when reflecting on his season under the Italian coach.
“Am I happy Conte has gone? Yes. In my opinion, he had to leave,” De Bruyne said. “Adapting to his style of football was difficult for me because he has a very different vision of the game from mine.”
The comments immediately attracted attention throughout Italy, with many interpreting them as a direct criticism of Conte’s tactical approach and management style.
The response arrived swiftly from Cristian Stellini, Conte’s long-time assistant and trusted right-hand man. Speaking to Corriere dello Sport, Stellini questioned De Bruyne’s attitude and commitment during his spell in Naples.
“Perhaps it makes little sense for clubs to sign players who are 33 years old, have achieved important things in their careers, and think more about aesthetics than the results of a season,” Stellini said.
The former Napoli assistant went even further, suggesting that De Bruyne never truly embraced the club or the city.
“If players of that experience arrive, they should be an example for younger players through their enthusiasm and their joy in representing a city like Naples. He never transmitted either joy or enthusiasm to me. I hope he finds experiences more suited to what he wants in the future.”
Whilst criticising De Bruyne, Stellini reserved special praise for another veteran midfielder who arrived in Serie A last summer, Luka Modric.

The Croatian impressed Stellini with the way he adapted to life at AC Milan, becoming a leader both on and off the pitch despite joining a side that often adopted a pragmatic style of play.
“I was very impressed by the way Modric integrated himself into Milan. He guided his teammates with leadership and enthusiasm, achieved excellent results, and never publicly criticised the coach or the club,” Stellini said.
“He demonstrated what it means to be a true professional. Being professional also means understanding what is required to improve the environment in which you work and setting the example for others.”
The exchange has provided a fascinating insight into what appears to have been a difficult relationship behind the scenes at Napoli. With Conte now gone and De Bruyne’s future still uncertain, the public disagreement has shed light on tensions that may have existed throughout the season.
For now, one thing appears clear: despite sharing the same dressing room, De Bruyne and Conte never truly shared the same footballing vision.
