Roma face potential €10m–€15m fine as UEFA financial ruling approaches

Roma could face a fine of between €10m and €15m for missing financial targets, with UEFA’s Club Financial Control Body expected to deliver its verdict in November, according to Italian reports.

The Rome edition of La Repubblica reports that a financial penalty is the most likely outcome, although restrictions on the club’s squad for European competitions could also follow.

The case concerns Roma’s compliance with the settlement agreement signed with UEFA four years ago.

According to the report, the club prioritised retaining key players over making sales before the 30 June deadline, preserving Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad ahead of their first Champions League campaign in seven years.

That approach reportedly left Roma outside the financial targets agreed with UEFA.

A more severe potential sanction would be exclusion from European competition for the 2027-28 season. However, no decision has been announced, and the report suggests Roma have received reassurances following discussions with UEFA president Aleksander Čeferin.

Club owner Dan Friedkin reportedly discussed the situation with Čeferin in Copenhagen on the sidelines of a meeting of European clubs.

Friedkin is said to have reiterated Roma’s commitment to bringing their finances into line, pointing to increased revenues and the additional income generated by their Champions League return.

The proposed stadium in Pietralata also forms part of the club’s longer-term plans to increase revenue. The report says Čeferin expressed support for the project.

Roma now await the financial control body’s assessment, which will determine whether a fine is sufficient or further sporting restrictions are required.
