Monza beat Fiorentina to register their first home win this season

Monza surprised everyone by securing their first Serie A home win of the season, beating Fiorentina 2-1 at Stadio Brianteo. This result left Monza’s former manager Raffaele Palladino, without a victory in his last six matches across all competitions.

Fiorentina hoped playing against the bottom team would help them find their form, but early misses from Albert Guðmundsson and Riccardo Sottil showed why they were struggling. In the 17th minute, Pablo Marí seemed to have given Fiorentina a penalty when he fouled Sottil in the box, but after a VAR review, the referee reversed the decision.

Fiorentina’s goalkeeper, David de Gea, had little to do in the first 20 minutes but was tested by a powerful shot from Warren Bondo, which narrowly missed his right post. Chances were few for the rest of the first half, and it looked like it would end with no shots on target. But in the 44th minute, Pedro Pereira’s pass was partially cleared and fell to Patrick Ciurria, who scored to put Monza ahead.

Palladino made a change at half-time, bringing on Lucas Beltrán, and the decision nearly paid off when Beltrán’s shot was cleared off the line by Andrea Carboni after a cross from Dodô. Fiorentina were growing frustrated, and Robin Gosens narrowly missed with a shot. Things got worse for Fiorentina just after the hour mark when Pereira crossed for Daniel Maldini, who scored with a volley to make it 2-0 to Monza.

In the final 20 minutes, Beltrán was fouled by Carboni in the box and won a penalty, which he scored despite de Gea getting a touch. Christian Kouamé’s late effort went wide, ending Fiorentina’s seven-match winning streak against teams at the bottom. This 2-1 victory ended Monza’s five-match losing streak in the league, with all those losses ending 2-1.
