AC Milan’s summer of change has taken another turn after goalkeeping coach Claudio Filippi confirmed his departure from the club, raising further questions over the future of Mike Maignan.
Filippi leaves Milan after just one season, following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and the dismissal of Massimiliano Allegri. His exit is part of a wider staff reshuffle at Milanello, but it could carry added weight because of his close relationship with Maignan.
The experienced coach posted a farewell message on Instagram, thanking Milan, the supporters and the goalkeepers he worked with during the season.
Filippi wrote that his time at Milan had come to an end after only one year, describing the club as “glorious” and Milanello as a “legendary” place to work. He also thanked the goalkeeping group, mentioning Mike, Pietro, Lorenzo and Matteo directly.
His departure may now become another factor in Maignan’s decision over his future. Last season, Allegri and his staff played an important role in convincing the French goalkeeper to remain part of the Milan project. That situation has now changed.
Maignan and Filippi developed a strong bond during the campaign, with the coach often seen encouraging the France international before and during matches. Without that trusted figure at Milanello, the goalkeeper may feel one step further away from the club.
The former Lille keeper remains admired by several top European clubs. Chelsea showed strong interest in 2025 and could return, while Maignan’s performances at the World Cup may again place him in the spotlight.
New Milan coach Ruben Amorim has already started speaking with key players as he looks to keep the core of the squad together. Maignan is among those players, but the Portuguese coach now faces a major test of persuasion.
For Milan, this is no longer just about replacing a goalkeeping coach. It is another sign of a changing environment around one of their most important players.
If Maignan was already considering his options, Filippi’s exit may only make the decision harder for the Rossoneri.
