Inter crowned in style despite late Verona equaliser as San Siro erupts into title celebrations

FC Internazionale Milano celebrated their Serie A title and Coppa Italia triumph in front of a jubilant San Siro crowd despite being held to a 1-1 draw by Hellas Verona FC on an emotional afternoon in Milan.

For Cristian Chivu’s side, the result itself mattered little. The Scudetto had already been secured, and the Nerazzurri arrived at San Siro ready to begin a night of celebrations after completing a domestic double earlier in the week.

The atmosphere around the stadium reflected a club fully immersed in celebration mode. Tributes, farewells and emotional ovations overshadowed the football itself, with supporters determined to honour a team that had dominated the Serie A campaign.

Among the afternoon’s main storylines was the desire to see departing players and struggling forwards get on the scoresheet. Lautaro Martínez, already assured of the Capocannoniere award, repeatedly looked to involve teammates rather than chase individual glory.

Inter eventually took the lead shortly after the restart when a corner delivered by Petar Sučić was turned goalwards by Ange-Yoan Bonny. However, the goal was later credited as an own goal by Edmundsson, extending Bonny’s frustrating scoring drought.

Verona refused to simply participate in the celebrations and continued to threaten sporadically. There were appeals for a penalty following contact involving Luis Henrique and Valentini, while Edmundsson also produced an important goal-line intervention to deny Lautaro.

As the second half progressed, the focus increasingly shifted towards emotional farewells.

Matteo Darmian received a warm ovation during what is expected to be his final appearance at San Siro in Inter colours. Lautaro later departed to a standing ovation before third-choice goalkeeper Di Gennaro was introduced to the delight of both teammates and supporters.

Just as Inter appeared ready to close out the afternoon with victory, Verona struck late through Bowie, whose equaliser briefly interrupted the celebrations but did little to dampen the mood inside the stadium.

At full time, attention immediately shifted from the match itself to the official trophy presentation, with a stage rapidly assembled on the pitch as Inter prepared for a night-long party through the streets of Milan.

Chivu: “Reuniting the Inter family was the main objective”

Speaking after lifting the Serie A trophy alongside Lautaro, Cristian Chivu praised the unity and mentality of his squad following an extraordinary campaign.

“These two trophies are the consequence of a group of men who worked hard and took responsibility,” Chivu told DAZN.

The Inter coach admitted he initially wanted to stay out of the spotlight during the trophy celebrations.

“They pushed me in there. I did not want to lift the trophy because these moments belong to the players,” he explained.

Chivu also highlighted two key moments he believes shaped the title race.

“Roma and Como were probably the decisive matches. They gave us a lot and took a lot away from our rivals.”

Reflecting on the broader achievement, Chivu added that reconnecting the club and supporters after last season’s disappointment had been the priority from day one.

“Reuniting the Inter family was the main objective and I think we achieved that in a great way.”

With the Scudetto secured and the Coppa Italia already in the cabinet, Inter now prepare to continue celebrations long into the Milan night after a season that restored complete dominance to the Nerazzurri.
