AC Milan are preparing for a new era following a series of major departures at the boardroom and technical level, with Zlatan Ibrahimović now leading the search for the club’s next head coach.
According to reports from Italy, Ibrahimovic has identified Andoni Iraola as his preferred candidate to replace Massimiliano Allegri, with a decisive meeting expected to take place in London in the coming hours.
Gerry Cardinale is also expected to attend the talks as Milan begin the second phase of what is being described as a full scale restructuring project at the club.
The Rossoneri have already confirmed the departures of Allegri, Igli Tare, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada, with Ibrahimovic now taking a leading role in shaping the club’s technical future.
Iraola has emerged as one of Europe’s most highly rated young coaches following an impressive three-year spell with AFC Bournemouth, where he guided the English side to a sixth-place Premier League finish and qualification for the UEFA Europa League.
The 43-year-old Spaniard, a former captain and club icon of Athletic Club, is set to leave Bournemouth at the end of the season after already confirming his departure from the club. Reports indicate that German coach Marco Rose has been lined up as his replacement on the south coast.

Iraola’s current salary in England is believed to be around €1.8 million net per season, a figure considered financially sustainable for Milan as they look to rebuild after a disappointing campaign.

Despite Iraola currently being the leading candidate, Milan are still monitoring several alternative options. Former FC Barcelona coach Xavi Hernández remains under consideration after stepping away from management since 2024, while former Milan midfielder Mark van Bommel is also admired by Ibrahimovic.

Another possible option is Thiago Motta, who remains under contract with Juventus FC despite having been dismissed last season.
