Grosso sacked as Fiorentina boss after three straight defeats in Serie A

Fiorentina have sacked Fabio Grosso after just three Serie A matches, following a disastrous start that saw La Viola lose all three games.

The Tuscan club confirmed the decision following Sunday’s defeat to Torino, which completed a miserable opening spell for Grosso after further losses against Roma and Frosinone.

Grosso’s side had taken the lead against Torino but were unable to hold on, suffering another defeat at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. The result triggered a swift change in the dugout, despite initial indications from the club that the coach retained their confidence.

The decision came as something of a surprise, with no Fiorentina official speaking to the media immediately after the Torino defeat. The club had appeared ready to back Grosso despite the poor results and growing frustration among supporters.

€130 million rebuild fails to deliver

Grosso was appointed in early June after his spell with Sassuolo, with sporting director Fabio Paratici choosing him to lead Fiorentina’s rebuilding project.

The club had invested heavily during the summer, spending around €130 million and bringing in 13 new players in an attempt to transform a squad that had struggled throughout the previous campaign.

Fiorentina eventually secured Serie A survival last season with two matches remaining, but the scale of their summer recruitment raised expectations that they could challenge for European qualification this time around.

Instead, three matches have produced three defeats, leaving Grosso without a single point before his dismissal.

The situation has now forced the club to reconsider its plans just weeks into the new campaign.

Vanoli linked with return

Fiorentina have yet to announce Grosso’s successor, but Paolo Vanoli has emerged as one of the leading candidates.

The 54-year-old previously took charge of La Viola in November 2025 after the club endured a disastrous opening to the 2025/26 season and spent much of the campaign battling near the relegation zone.

Vanoli managed to guide Fiorentina to a 15th-place finish and safety, but the club opted against retaining him at the end of the season.

Now, just months later, a return to Florence could be on the cards.

Fiorentina’s next Serie A fixture comes on Friday against Venezia at the Stadio Pier Luigi Penzo, with the club expected to move quickly to appoint a new head coach.
