Brescianini's late equaliser keeps Atalanta on top

Lazio were denied back-to-back home wins against Atalanta for the first time since 2017, as Gian Piero Gasperini’s side equalised in the 88th minute, earning a 1-1 draw at the Stadio Olimpico and returning to the top of Serie A.

Atalanta have had a great season, winning a club-record 11 consecutive league matches before this one, as they push for the title. However, it was Lazio who started stronger, with Mattéo Guendouzi hitting the crossbar with a brilliant curled shot after a few early chances for the hosts.

Atalanta struggled early, particularly in defence, and Lazio capitalised when Nicolò Rovella lifted a clever ball over the Atalanta defenders, setting up Dele-Bashiru to score from 12 yards. Lazio went into half-time with their lead intact and Atalanta rarely troubling them.

Atalanta, however, have been impressive this season and weren’t going to give up easily. They almost equalised in the 60th minute, but Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel made a fantastic save to deny Ademola Lookman. Lazio had their own standout performer in Rovella, who controlled the game and helped at both ends.

With Atalanta growing frustrated, Lazio had another chance to extend their lead, but Dele-Bashiru missed an easy chance from 10 yards. This proved costly, as in the final minutes, Lookman set up Marco Brescianini to score and earn Atalanta a draw with just two minutes left.

Lazio remain in the top four, six points behind Atalanta, who moved ahead of Inter by a point at the top of the table, though they’ve played one more match.
