A major restructuring appears to be underway at AC Milan, with club owner Gerry Cardinale reportedly preparing to hand significantly greater authority to Zlatan Ibrahimović ahead of next season.
According to reports emerging from Italy following a high-level meeting in London involving Cardinale and senior club executives, Ibrahimović is set to become the central figure in Milan’s sporting structure as the Rossoneri prepare for another summer rebuild.
The former Sweden international had previously operated in an advisory role linked to RedBird Capital, maintaining a visible presence around Milanello while remaining largely outside the club’s formal decision-making process.
However, that situation now appears to have changed dramatically.
Cardinale is understood to have entrusted Ibrahimović with a far more influential position, effectively placing him at the centre of the club’s football operations. The former striker is expected to play a decisive role in transfer strategy, squad management and the appointment of key figures within the sporting department.
The move comes amid growing pressure on Milan’s hierarchy following a disappointing campaign, which has left qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League far from guaranteed.
Chief executive Giorgio Furlani is also reportedly facing increasing scrutiny, with sections of the supporters openly questioning the club’s direction in recent months. Ibrahimović’s rise within the structure could reduce Furlani’s influence over sporting matters and potentially trigger wider organisational changes behind the scenes.
Uncertainty also surrounds the future of coach Massimiliano Allegri. Italian reports suggest relations between Allegri and Ibrahimović have deteriorated significantly, with the Swede believed to favour a younger, more aggressive footballing project.
As a result, Allegri’s position is said to be increasingly fragile, with his departure at the end of the season emerging as a realistic possibility.
Cardinale is believed to see Ibrahimović’s leadership, mentality and winning experience as central to Milan’s next phase, despite criticism from some supporters who continue to call for the return of former director Paolo Maldini.
Attention will now turn towards the summer transfer window, where Milan face mounting pressure to rebuild a squad capable of immediately competing for major honours both domestically and in Europe.
