The International Football Federation (FIFA) today accused the Football Association of Serbia of hanging a political banner about so-called Kosovo in the dressing room of its national team before the match against Brazil in the first round of the World Cup.
In the dressing room of the Serbian team on Thursday, a Serbian flag with a map of Kosovo and the inscription “No surrender” was hung. Serbia played against Brazil and lost 0:2.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports of Kosovo Hajrulah Ceku complained to FIFA about that flag and stated that the World Cup was used to promote “xenophobic, genocidal and hateful messages towards Kosovo”.
FIFA cited a section of its disciplinary code that covers misconduct, including “offensive gestures, signs or language” and the promotion of non-sporting matters.
The World Football Association did not say when it will pronounce the verdict, and Serbia will play against Cameroon in the second round of the World Cup on Monday at 11:00 am.
