Real Madrid Eyeing Raphael Varane Reunion Amid Defensive Crisis

Real Madrid is reportedly considering a move to bring back Manchester United defender Raphael Varane to the Bernabeu.

Varane, who enjoyed legendary success with Real Madrid between 2011 and 2021, winning three La Liga titles and four Champions League crowns, made a high-profile move to Manchester United in search of a new challenge.

However, since joining the Premier League club, Varane has faced challenges in maintaining a consistent spot in the starting XI and has not replicated his previous success. Despite adding an EFL Cup to his list of silverware, the 2018 World Cup winner has struggled to live up to expectations.

Under manager Erik ten Hag, Varane has experienced periods out of the first XI but recently returned to start crucial fixtures against Bayern Munich and Liverpool, contributing to a clean sheet in the latter.

While Varane is reportedly keen on fighting for his place at Old Trafford, Real Madrid is considering him as a potential January addition. The Spanish club is currently grappling with a defensive crisis, with David Alaba and Eder Militao both sidelined with serious knee injuries, ruling them out for the remainder of the season.

With Carlo Ancelotti left with limited fit central defenders, including Antonio Rudiger and Nacho, there is speculation that Real Madrid may contact Manchester United to negotiate a deal for Varane. The French defender has less than 18 months remaining on his contract, making him a potential target in the upcoming transfer window.

While the fee for Varane remains uncertain, Manchester United’s interest in reducing the wage bill and generating income for potential additions in January could play a role in any negotiations.
