The head coach of the Qatar national football team, Felix Sanchez, said today that all criticism of the hosts of the World Cup will not disturb his team.
Qatar starts the tournament tomorrow with a match against Ecuador, while all the eyes of the world are on this country that faces criticism for human rights violations, especially for the LGBTQ+ community, as well as for its treatment of migrant workers.
“The best thing that can happen is to focus on football, stay calm and avoid all the noise and rumors,” said Sanchez, who led Qatar to triumph at the 2019 Asian Cup.
- Of course, we don’t like it when people criticize our country… but we managed to prepare well and stay calm – added this Spanish coach.
He dismissed as “disinformation” rumors that Qatar tried to bribe Ecuador’s players ahead of the match.
- We trained and prepared for many, many, many years. We are strong together. Nobody will be able to destabilize us – said Sanchez.
- We are motivated and happy to play at the World Cup tomorrow. We have to control our emotions, to play the best we can, not paying attention to anything else – he added.
Qatar, playing in its first World Cup, is in Group A with Ecuador, Senegal, and the Netherlands.
