What has been talked about lately is now confirmed, namely that Roberto Martinez is the new coach of Portugal.
After the failure with Belgium at the World Cup in Qatar, the expert from Spain resigned, but it did not take him long to find a new job.
Roberto will be on the bench for Belgium instead of Fernando Santos, who won Euro 2016 but was fired after being eliminated in the quarterfinals of the World Cup by Morocco.
Martinez was born in Balaguer, a small town in Catalonia; he is 49 years old, and in addition to playing for the local club, he also played for Zaragoza.
What marked his career were the teams he coached at: Wigan, Motherwell, Walsall, Chester, and Swansea, where he started his coaching career in 2007.
What will be remembered now is that Martinez is the first “real” foreigner on Portugal’s bench, because until now the only foreigners at the helm of the “navigator” were the Brazilians Otto Gloria and Luiz Felipe Scolari.
