Italian coach Stefano Pioli is facing mounting pressure at Al Nassr following a surprise 2-1 defeat to Al Orubah, a result that could see his tenure at the Saudi club come to an abrupt end.
Al Nassr, considered one of the strongest teams in the Saudi Pro League, was stunned by Al Orubah, a side that has struggled for form this season. In the match on Friday, Syrian striker Omar Al Somah gave Al Orubah the lead in the 41st minute.
Despite Al Nassr response early in the second half with an equaliser from Nawaf Boushal, Al Orubah delivered the decisive blow in the 65th minute. Icelandic international Johan Berg Gudmundsson fired past goalkeeper Bento, securing an unexpected victory for the underdogs.
The result leaves Al Nassr in third place in the league standings, but they now trail leaders Al Ittihad by a significant nine-point margin. With the title race slipping away, pressure is growing on Pioli to turn things around quickly.
Pioli has been at the helm of Al Nassr since 18 September 2024, having replaced Portuguese manager Luis Castro. His appointment was seen as a strategic move to bring tactical discipline and experience to a squad featuring top talents, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Sadio Mané.
However, performances have been inconsistent, and this latest setback has raised serious doubts over his ability to lead the team to silverware. The loss to Al Orubah follows a string of underwhelming displays, adding to the frustration of the club’s hierarchy and fanbase.
While Al Nassr remain among the league’s top contenders, their performances have lacked the consistency expected of a team with such high-profile players. The attacking prowess of Ronaldo and Talisca has often papered over tactical flaws, but defensive frailties and struggles against lower-ranked teams have become a recurring issue.
Pioli’s tactics have come under scrutiny, with critics arguing that his defensive setups have left the team vulnerable to counter-attacks. Al Nassr’s inability to break down resilient defences has also been a concern, particularly against sides that set up deep and look to exploit gaps on the counter.
Should Al Nassr decide to part ways with Pioli, several high-profile names have been linked as potential successors. The Saudi club has the financial resources to attract top managerial talent, with figures such as Zinedine Zidane, José Mourinho, and Thomas Tuchel reportedly being monitored.
However, the immediate challenge for Pioli will be to convince the club’s board that he can still salvage the season. A strong response in the upcoming matches is crucial if he is to retain his position.
With the title race slipping away, Al Nassr must refocus their efforts on securing a strong finish in the league and competing for other domestic and continental honours. Their upcoming fixtures will be pivotal, not only in determining their chances of silverware but also in deciding Pioli’s fate at the club.
Unless results improve swiftly, the Italian manager could soon find himself out of a job, as Al Nassr seek a solution to their recent struggles.
