Veteran defender Nicolás Otamendi has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 17-year career with Argentina during which he helped his country win the 2022 FIFA World Cup and two Copa América titles.

Otamendi made 139 appearances for the Albiceleste and established himself as one of the nation’s most dependable defenders. He represented Argentina at four FIFA World Cups, playing a pivotal role during one of the most successful periods in the country’s football history.

Reflecting on his international journey, Otamendi described the announcement as the most difficult of his career.

“Today I have to write the most difficult words of my career,” he wrote on Instagram. “Fate decided that my final match would be a World Cup final. It wasn’t the result we hoped for, but I leave with my head held high, knowing this team gave everything until the very last second. Thank you, Argentina, for allowing me to live the dream of becoming a world champion.”

Otamendi recently returned to his homeland after signing for River Plate, ending a highly successful 16-year spell in European football. During his time abroad, he represented Porto, Valencia, Manchester City and Benfica, winning numerous domestic honours and establishing himself as one of the game’s most consistent central defenders.

His retirement marks the end of an illustrious international career that will be remembered for its leadership, resilience and major achievements on football’s biggest stage.
