Sporting CP President Frederico Varandas has dismissed recent reports suggesting the club would accept a €70 million offer for star striker Viktor Gyökeres, amid strong transfer links to Manchester United and Arsenal.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Varandas clarified that no offers have been made for the Swedish forward, who scored a remarkable 54 goals last season and has netted 97 goals in 102 appearances since joining from Coventry City in 2023. Gyökeres has played a crucial role in Sporting’s consecutive Primeira Liga titles in 2023–24 and 2024–25.
Varandas denied the existence of a so-called “gentleman’s agreement” that would allow Gyökeres to depart for €70 million, saying:
“I can guarantee that Viktor Gyökeres will not leave for €60 million plus €10 million because I never promised that.”
Although Gyökeres has a €100 million release clause in his contract, which runs for another three years, Varandas revealed that Sporting would not insist on the full amount, yet also won’t set a fixed price for a potential sale.
“I don’t know if it will be €40 million, €60 million or €80 million. What I can guarantee is that I will not demand €100 million.”
The comments signal Sporting’s intent to retain control over Gyökeres’ future, while leaving the door open to negotiations — but only under their own terms.
