Michał Probierz has stepped down as head coach of Poland’s national football team, just days after a public dispute with team captain and star striker Robert Lewandowski, the Polish Football Association confirmed Thursday.
“I have come to the conclusion that, given the current situation, the best decision for the good of the national team is my resignation,” Probierz stated in an official announcement.
The resignation follows a controversial move earlier this week when Probierz stripped Lewandowski of the team captaincy, appointing Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zieliński as the new skipper ahead of a crucial World Cup qualifier against Finland.
Lewandowski, 36, responded swiftly, declaring he would no longer play for Poland as long as Probierz remained in charge. Days later, the national team suffered a shocking 2-1 loss to Finland, leaving Poland’s World Cup qualification hopes in serious doubt.
A record-holder for his country, Lewandowski has earned 158 caps and scored 85 goals, making him the all-time leading scorer and arguably the greatest footballer in Poland’s history. The Barcelona striker recently helped his club win the La Liga title and withdrew from a friendly against Moldova last week, citing exhaustion.
Probierz took the reins in September 2023, succeeding Fernando Santos after a poor run. He successfully guided Poland to the 2024 European Championship, but his leadership has since come under scrutiny due to inconsistent results and now, internal discord.
The situation escalated when Polish Football Association (PZPN) president Cezary Kulesza called Probierz in for an emergency meeting on Wednesday.
“I give coaches a lot of freedom, but with that comes responsibility. I expect results, first and foremost,” Kulesza said. “These were difficult days for the fans of the national team.”
With a major tournament on the horizon and qualification at risk, the Polish FA must now move quickly to find a new manager who can repair fractured team dynamics and rally the squad in time for critical matches ahead.
