Watch: Ħamrun Spartans close in on Norwegian left back Tobias Bjørnstad

Malta Sport have learnt that Ħamrun Spartans are on the verge of signing 24-year-old left back Tobias Bjørnstad.

The Norwegian defender came through the youth ranks at Strømsgodset before progressing to their reserve side. He then moved to Mjøndalen IF II, followed by a stint at Notodden, before earning a transfer to Swedish side Örebro SK in early 2024.

From there he moved to Bulgarian club Lokomotiv Plovdiv in the summer of 2025, though his time in Bulgaria was short-lived, and after he had a stint with German side 1. FC Phönix Lübeck in the Regionalliga Nord, where he contributed one assist in 10 appearances.

He rejoined Strømsgodset in February 2026, where he has been playing in the OBOS-ligaen, Norway’s second tier. A few days ago, Strømsgodset announced that the two parties agreed to end Bjørnstad’s experience with the team.

On their official website the player left the following statement:

I would like to thank everyone in and around Godset – a club that has meant a lot to me over the years. It wasn’t the return I had hoped for in terms of playing time. When I had the opportunity to go to a new club and get more playing time, it was a wish on my part. I wish the club and everyone the best of luck, and hope we can all watch the Eliteserien at Marienlyst next year.

Malta Sport can also confirm that the player is in Malta and is close to signing a contract with the Spartans.
