Sliema Wanderers face turbulent days after Jubilee Cup final disappointment

Sliema Wanderers are navigating a difficult period following their 3-1 defeat to Valletta in the Jubilee Cup final, a result that has sparked frustration among both supporters and committee members.

In a statement issued this week, the Sliema Wanderers Supporters Club announced unanimously that for Sunday’s upcoming league match against Valletta, no choreography or flags will be present at the ground. At the same time, the entire supporters committee will also refrain from attending. The supporters described the decision as a painful one, taken after what they feel have been repeated sacrifices that were not reciprocated on the pitch.

“It is heartbreaking that a glorious club like ours, whenever we reach the final step, ends up fearful and stumbling,” the statement read, reflecting the growing sense of disappointment after another lost final.

Vice President Walter Arciola also voiced concerns surrounding the team’s direction during an appearance on the Buzu Premier Podcast. Arciola admitted that the season has not unfolded as planned and hinted that changes to the playing squad could be made when the winter transfer window opens. He also called for a strong response on Sunday against Valletta, describing the performance of a few players in Monday’s final as unacceptable.

Despite the criticism coming from outside the dressing room, the players appear determined to remain focused. Malta Sport contacted several Sliema Wanderers players. They stressed that while they understand the frustration expressed by supporters and officials, they respect differing opinions.

“Everyone is entitled to their opinion, and people will always make the decisions they feel are right. We respect that,” the players said. “Last week we had more supporters than usual, and we genuinely appreciated that. We are sorry and disappointed that we could not send them home happy, because we know how much it meant.”

The players insisted that their responsibility remains unchanged regardless of the atmosphere in the stands. “Whether the stadium is full or empty, whether there are flags or not, our job is the same. We step onto the pitch to give our best, prepare properly, work hard, and perform.”

They also underlined their gratitude for the support received throughout the year, both from the fans and from the committee, stressing that such backing does not go unnoticed within the squad.

With important fixtures ahead, Sliema Wanderers now face a defining moment. The immediate priority is a reaction on the pitch, while the wider challenge will be to restore unity after a Jubilee Cup final that has left disappointment running deep across the club.
