Sliema Wanderers continue defensive rebuild with move for Diego Cámara

Fresh from completing the signing of Malta international Alexander Satariano, Sliema Wanderers are now closing in on another important addition to their squad, with Spanish defender Diego Cámara Calleja expected to become the club’s latest summer recruit.

The 27-year-old centre-back is set to arrive from Belgian Challenger Pro League side KSC Lokeren, continuing Sliema’s ambitious recruitment drive ahead of the new Malta Premier League season.

Born in Guadalajara, Spain, Cámara stands 1.84 metres tall and is a right-footed central defender known for his composure on the ball, aerial strength and ability to organise the back line. He is represented by Goal International and currently has an estimated market value of €300,000.

Cámara developed his football in Spain before building his senior career across the Spanish lower divisions with clubs including CD Azuqueca, CD Marchamalo, CDA Navalcarnero, CF Talavera B and CE Sabadell. His performances earned him a move to Belgium in the summer of 2025 when he joined KSC Lokeren.

During the 2025–26 campaign, the Spaniard established himself as one of Lokeren’s most consistent defenders. He made 26 appearances in all competitions, including 22 league matches, scoring once and becoming a regular starter in the Belgian second tier.

Sliema view Cámara as a player capable of bringing leadership and experience to the heart of their defence. His season in Belgium, combined with several years of senior football in Spain, has provided him with valuable experience that the Wanderers believe can strengthen their back line.

Should the move be completed, Cámara would become another significant addition to a Sliema squad that is showing clear ambition ahead of the new campaign, with the Wanderers continuing to reinforce key areas as they aim to challenge at the top end of the Malta Premier League.
