Former Italy international goalkeeper Marco Amelia is set to become the new head coach of Ħamrun Spartans, Malta Sport understands.
Sources have informed Malta Sport that Amelia is expected to arrive in Malta on Friday to conclude talks with the club before finalising his appointment.
Malta Sport understands that Ħamrun Spartans held discussions throughout Thursday with several coaching candidates, including Italian coaches who have previously worked in Maltese football. Following those meetings, the club opted to move forward with Amelia, with negotiations now in their final stages.
The 43-year-old enjoyed an illustrious playing career, representing clubs including Roma, Livorno, Palermo, Genoa, AC Milan, Perugia and Chelsea, while also being part of Italy’s 2006 FIFA World Cup-winning squad. Since hanging up his gloves, Amelia has moved into coaching and holds a UEFA Pro Licence.
Should the remaining formalities be completed as expected, Amelia will begin a new chapter in his career with the Spartans, taking charge of the Maltese Premier League club ahead of the new season.
An official announcement is expected once the final details of the agreement are completed.
