Malta Sport understands that newly promoted Birżebbuġa St Peter’s have completed another important addition to their squad, with former Gżira United defensive midfielder Luis Riascos joining the club ahead of their return to the Malta Premier League.
The Colombian midfielder, 24, has already integrated into the squad and was present during Birżebbuġa St Peter’s Media Day, underlining that the move has been completed and that Riascos is now fully part of the club’s preparations for the new season.
Riascos is a defensive midfielder who arrived in Malta as a teenager in 2019, initially joining Santa Lucia. He subsequently moved to Gżira United, who secured his services in 2020 on a long-term contract.
The midfielder also gained valuable first-team experience during loan spells, including a season with Senglea Athletic and a move to Mosta, before establishing himself at Gżira.
His most recent spell with Gżira saw him become an important midfield option. During the 2025/26 Premier League season, Riascos made 27 league appearances, according to available statistical records.
Known primarily for his defensive work in midfield, Riascos brings experience of Maltese top-flight football to a Birżebbuġa side preparing for the step up after winning promotion.
The move also represents another addition of a foreign player who was out of contract, with Birżebbuġa continuing to build their squad aggressively ahead of what promises to be a demanding Premier League campaign.
For the newly promoted side, the signing fits a clear strategy of adding players with established experience in Malta rather than relying solely on newcomers to the domestic game.
Riascos now becomes another piece of an increasingly ambitious Birżebbuġa St Peter’s squad, with the club making it clear through their recruitment that simply surviving in the Premier League is unlikely to be their only objective.
