Ħamrun Spartans have completed the signing of Maltese International Jake Grech, who returns to the club where it all began for him in what is for sure one of the most talked-about transfers of the Maltese football summer.
The 28-year-old midfielder, joins Ħamrun on a 3 year contract after his contract with Floriana expired at the end of last month and decided not to renew with the Greens after 2 and a half seasons.
Grech, who came through the youth ranks at Ħamrun Spartans, began his senior career with the Spartans playing a key role in the club’s remarkable journey back from the Second Division to the Premier League. Now, more than eight years later, he returns as one of the most experienced and decorated midfielders in Maltese football.
The 28-year-old arrives at Ħamrun on the back of an outstanding season with Floriana, where he was one of the standout performers in the club’s YoHealth Malta Premier League title winning campaign in 2025/26. He scored 14 goals in all competitions and his performances throughout the season earned him a nomination for the MFA Footballer of the Year award, underlining just how highly he is regarded in the Maltese game.
Grech’s career has taken him through some of Malta’s biggest clubs. After leaving Ħamrun in 2017, he joined Birkirkara before moving on to Hibernians in 2019. It was at Hibernians that he enjoyed the most successful spell of his career up to that point, winning the Premier League in 2021/22 and the Super Cup in 2022/23. A short half-season spell at Balzan followed before he joined Floriana in January 2024 as part of a swap deal that saw Jan Busuttil move in the opposite direction.
At Floriana, Grech flourished, becoming a driving force in the club’s midfield and playing a crucial role in delivering the Premier League title. His ability to score goals, create chances and lead by example made him one of the most influential players in the division.
On the international stage, Grech represented his country at Under-17, Under-19 and Under-21 level before earning his senior debut in 2018. He has since gone on to collect 26 senior caps and will be remembered for one of Malta’s finest recent international moments, his 82nd-minute winner in Helsinki in November 2025 that gave Malta a historic 1-0 victory over Finland in World Cup qualifying.
Now, with a wealth of experience behind him, and having scored more than 90 goals in the Premier League, Grech heads back to Ħamrun Spartans, a club with enormous ambitions of their own following the announcements made by president Joseph Portelli at the recent AGM, including a budget of €3.25 million for the upcoming season.
