Ħamrun Spartans’ YoHealth Malta Premier clash with Valletta has been moved to Sunday, 31 August, as the champions look to make history in European competition.
The fixture, originally set for Monday, 25 August, was rescheduled by the Malta Premier League to give Ħamrun maximum preparation time for the second leg of their UEFA play-off tie, a match that could see them become the first Maltese club to reach the league phase of a European competition. The decisive fixture will be played away from home just days after the original Valletta date, and the change means the Spartans avoid a tight turnaround involving travel and recovery.
The Malta Premier League also confirmed that all Match Day 3 fixtures have been postponed, with new dates and venues to be announced in due course.
In a press release, Ħamrun Spartans thanked the majority of Premier League clubs for supporting the move. The club said the schedule change would allow them to prepare “to the best of our capabilities” for a historic qualification, which they believe could transform Maltese football. They highlighted the potential financial rewards, greater exposure, and the chance to attract higher-quality players as benefits that would be felt across the league.
“We guarantee that no stone will be left unturned to reach the objective we all wish,” the statement added.
