Gżira United face a daunting task as they take on reigning champions Floriana, with the Maroons still searching for their first points of the Malta Premier League season.
Three matches have brought three defeats for Gżira, who now need to produce something special against an organised Floriana side if they are to kick-start their campaign.
The Maroons suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat to Birkirkara in their opening match before losing 3-0 to Valletta. Their latest outing against Balzan offered more encouragement as Gżira took the lead, but they eventually slipped to a 2-1 defeat after conceding two penalties.
The numbers make for difficult reading, with Gżira having already conceded eight goals in their opening three matches.
Floriana showing their strength
Floriana, meanwhile, have made a solid start to their title defence. The Greens have collected seven points from their opening three matches, beating Birżebbuġa before producing an impressive victory in the Old Firm Derby against Sliema. They were then held to a draw by Hamrun Spartans, conceding their first goal of the campaign in the process.
Coach Daniel Portela has built a well-organised side which has already shown its ability to compete at the top end of the table. Paul Mbong and Dunstan Vella have been among the standout performers for the Greens, while newcomer Muric has also made an impression since arriving at the club.
Can Abdilla turn Gżira around?
For Gżira, the pressure is beginning to build. Brooklyn Borg has provided one of the few positive sparks in the opening weeks, but several players have struggled to find their best form and the team has yet to find the consistency required at this level. Now Darren Abdilla faces the challenge of turning things around.
A victory against the champions would undoubtedly provide a huge lift, but Gżira will know that Floriana are unlikely to offer many opportunities.
For the Maroons, it is a match where they need to show character, resilience and perhaps produce a stunner to finally get their season moving in the right direction.
