Floriana FC picked up a 1-0 win over Hibernians FC in Matchday 8 of the YoHealth Malta Premier League, strengthening their position at the top of the table to four points.
Moustapha Jah scored the decisive goal, giving Floriana an early advantage. Hibernians, who currently sit fourth, struggled to challenge their opponents on the day.
The Greens started brightly and came close to opening the scoring in the 14th minute when Joao Teixeira found Mattija Veselji in space, but his shot went wide. Moments later, Federico Varela delivered a pass to Jah, who held off his marker and slotted the ball past Hugo Sacco to make it 1-0.
Shortly after, Jah was fouled in the penalty area by Bjorn Kristensen, but Sacco produced a fine save to keep Hibernians in the game. The Paolites’ challenge was made harder by the absence of eight players and an early defensive change, with Charleston replaced by Aiden Zammit.
After the early goal, the game became more physical and chances were limited. Floriana almost doubled their lead before half-time when Sacco failed to hold a cross and Teixeira’s follow-up effort was blocked.
Following the break, Hibernians tried to push forward, but Floriana remained the side creating the clearest opportunities. On 58 minutes, Varela played Jah in again, but the striker shot wide from close range. Veselji also went close with a strike from the edge of the area that went just past the post.
Hibernians threatened in the closing stages when Villela drove into the box, but his cross-shot was not converted by Cleiton in front of goal. Despite late pressure, Hibernians were unable to find an equaliser as Floriana held on for the win.
The result gives Floriana coach Daniel Portela a boost as his team prepares for upcoming fixtures against Birkirkara, Ħamrun Spartans and Sliema Wanderers. On the other hand, Hibernians coach Branko Nisevic will have plenty to work on as his side looks to recover from a difficult day.
