Balzan may be among the most underestimated teams ahead of the new Malta Premier League season, but the newly promoted club have quietly begun transforming their structure both on and off the pitch.
While several rivals have attracted greater attention through high-profile signings and public announcements, Balzan’s recent activity suggests that preparations for their return to the top flight are being taken seriously. One of the clearest changes has been the improvement in the club’s branding and social-media output, which has become more consistent, professional and recognisable compared to recent seasons.
The club have also strengthened their sporting department by co-opting Malcolm Camilleri as technical director. The former Birkirkara committee member brings considerable experience and extensive knowledge of Maltese football, having also served his former club as a player and committee member.
Camilleri has made a wider contribution to the local game as the founder and president of Veterans Malta FA. His experience, contacts and understanding of domestic football are expected to play an important role in shaping Balzan’s sporting strategy and helping the club develop a stronger winning culture.
His appointment forms part of a broader attempt to establish a more professional setup following promotion from the Challenge League. Balzan have also unveiled eight new signings through their official channels, demonstrating their intention to strengthen Andrew Cohen’s squad rather than depend entirely on the group that secured promotion.
Balzan have also brought in Clayton Schembri, who was also part of Birkirkara F.C. He is now coordinating social media, content creation and branding for the Reds.
The club’s renewed communication strategy has helped present those arrivals in a more coordinated and professional manner, while also creating greater engagement within the Balzan community. The improvement may appear cosmetic at first, but it reflects a wider desire to strengthen the club’s identity and operating standards.
