Videos and photos expose brawls, threats and vulgar abuse in Maltese youth football

A MaltaSport investigation, carried out in collaboration with various investigative journalists, has uncovered alarming footage and photographs that paint a deeply troubling picture of Malta’s youth football environment.

The videos, published alongside this article, reveal scenes of verbal abuse, threats and violent behaviour, raising serious concerns about the safeguarding of children involved in local football academies and clubs.

In the footage, coaches are seen shouting profanities at young players and issuing threatening commands. In one particularly shocking clip, a coach is heard threatening to “break a player’s legs” if he does not stop swinging his arms and follow instructions. This is not an isolated event. In another video, a coach can be heard swearing profusely at his players.

Several other videos and messages have been submitted to MaltaSport, all of which depict a broader pattern of hostility and emotional intimidation, suggesting that such toxic behaviour may be far more widespread than previously thought.

The crisis was first brought to public attention by former national team coach Pippo Psaila, who, several months ago, raised concerns about the intense pressure placed on children by football clubs. His warning ignited a wave of debate and scrutiny within the football community.

In the weeks that followed, further investigations uncovered confidential documents, leaked chat logs and disturbing video evidence that strongly indicate systemic manipulation and coercion involving youth players and their families. The evidence points to a deeply entrenched problem that demands urgent attention from those in positions of authority.

One of the most serious incidents occurred after a youth football match, when a violent altercation broke out between parents. The confrontation escalated to the point where stones were thrown and several cars were damaged. Witnesses described scenes of panic and aggression, likening them to a war zone, as shown in the photos below. Children were left frightened and exposed to a volatile and unsafe environment.

The audio-visual material published with this article provides unequivocal evidence of the emotional and physical risks faced by young players and young match officials. The language used by some coaches, administrators and parents is not only inappropriate and abusive, but it reflects a wider culture of indiscipline and neglect that appears to have taken root within the local youth football structure.

In the aftermath of the incident, Pippo Psaila resigned from a board to which he had been appointed. Expressing his frustration at the lack of action, he remarked, “As American presidents often say, the buck stops with me.” He added that now, the buck must stop with the MFA. Unless the top officials take full responsibility, the abuse will continue to rot the foundations of youth football.

As this investigation reveals, the time for silence and denial is over. The question now facing the Malta Football Association is not whether they were aware, but for how much longer they can afford to ignore the mounting evidence before meaningful and lasting reform is implemented.
